    Niger Delta Weekly Update for May 16-22, 2021

    This edition of the weekly update spotlights vigilantism and mob justice in the Niger Delta with a focus on mob violence in Delta State. Accord-ing to data (see map below), vigilantism and mob violence caused over 75 fatalities in Delta State between January 2018 and December 2020. Recent incidents indicate the prevalence of mob violence in the State, driven mainly by a rise in criminality, particularly robbery and kidnap-ping. In January 2021, for instance, two robbery suspects were reportedly lynched by a mob in Iwhrekan community, Ughelli North LGA. In March, a robbery suspect was reportedly lynched by a mob along Usiefurun Road in Orhuwhorun community, Udu LGA. Separately, in March, a robbery suspect was reportedly burned to death by a mob at McIver Market in Warri South LGA. A second suspect reportedly sustained second -degree burns during the incident. In April, a robbery suspect was reportedly burned to death by a mob in Ovwian community, Udu LGA. More recently, on May 10, 2021, three kidnapping suspects were reportedly lynched by a mob in Oghara community, Ethiope West LGA.
